Top 5 Most Wearable Trends For Spring/Summer 2014

Now that you have scooped up more than you bargained for in snow, and the sun is finally here, it’s time to update your wardrobe and pull out some of your hottest pieces from last year!

PEEK-A-BOO

The crop top has survived the brutal winter, and made a triumphant comeback from spring/summer 2013. We saw crop tops featured on runways for designers Tracy Reese, Balengencia, Herve Leger and Alexander Wang. Now that spring is here some of our favorite stores such as Zara Top Shop ASOS are begging us to play hide and seek with our mid sections for those long summer days and late nights.

How to Wear:

  1. Pair your crop top with some high waist denims or trousers in the day or night
  2. Use a conservative cropped top as an inner piece to your suit to let the world know that you can still have fun
  3. If the night gets a little chilly or the event you’re attending demands a more covered look, why not throw on a blazer
  4. For a classier effect pair your crop top with a flirty full skirt. Think Kerry Washington at the SAG awards (as seen below)

Sheer a little or Maybe a lot

Translucent fabrics dominated the runaways as all designers dabbled with exposing a little more skin than usual. Most, if not all of the pieces in this trend should be worn with the utmost discretion. I say this because wearing sheer can go from pretty and stylish, to extremely trashy! Redbook’s fashion director Audrey Slater said, that, “The see through look is meant to be saved for the weekend or evening.” Nevertheless, we were given endless options of sheering: tops, skirts, pants, and dresses.

How to Wear:

  1. Seek out tops with sheer panels and sleeves. Most good quality sheer tops have an undergarment
  2. If an entire skirt is made of translucent fabric, wear with an opaque legging or tights of another color. Or you can be daring and show a little leg
  3. If a dress is completely translucent, take the opportunity to wear a form fitting solid or patterned dress underneath, or show a little skin in the right places and walk with confidence

In Bloom

You will have no problem making a statement with floral prints, which have taken over the racks this spring/summer. The prints have a new identity altogether, with leaf heavy prints, delicate flower patterns, brush stroked flowers, mismatched petals and more. Stella McCartney, BCBG Max Aria and Rebecca Taylor are just a handful of designers, who were unapologetic about filling their collections with blooming prints. This is a fashion bloom that we can’t be allergic to.

 How to Wear:

  1. For delicate floral prints opt for lightweight fabrics
  2. For a mismatch of floral prints, keep it simple with a cute pair of heels or sandals
  3. For more vibrant and bold floral clothing; don’t be afraid to make a statement

Sporty Chic

With May Madness well on its way, NBA championships around the corner, and World Cup 2014 in June, the runways were adorned with sporting wear. Some designers kept the street wear spin and added other textures and patterns to give sporty style a more glamorous look, like designer Vera Wang who used mesh and chiffon on her hoodies and windbreakers. While conventional sporting wear designers like Lacoste brought slouchy silhouettes and oversized jackets and Tommy Hilfiger added a bit of prep to its runway looks.

How to Wear:

  1. Is it windy outside? Grab a hoody or windbreaker to rock that day
  2. For an entire look spice your sporty side with accessories and a bold lip

Full Skirt

At the beginning of the year we saw Kerry Washington looking elegant in a full-length skirt at the SAG awards. A few weeks later we saw an editorial, in The Coveteur magazine, of rapper Kelis in a full tulle skirt in the most gorgeous shade of pink. Most recently Jessica Alba rocked a mellow yellow mid length full skirt at the MTV Movie Awards. This ladylike vintage style redefines sexy and gives a little more than usual to total refinement.

 How to Wear:

  1. Pair with a crop top showing just a sliver of skin
  2. Wear it to work dropping your pencil skirt for a day
  3. Tuck your tops in or wear them on the outside
  4. Don’t be afraid to layer
