I’m kicking myself right now, because it’s nearly one month into 2014 and I have failed – on all counts – to follow through on my New Year Resolutions! Who else feels like this? I made grand plans to knock off at least 3 goals from my to-do-list by the end of January, and erm…even I’m still waiting for me to start. I wish I could justify my behavior to ease my sense of guilt, but frankly my excuses are wearing thin.
My mentor, Viven Rose keeps reminding me, unless I get myself into gear, 2015 will roll around and I will be in exactly the same place.
Over my dead body!
Granted my social life is nowhere near as exciting as it once was, I’m still a classic case of someone who gets distracted all too easily. When I’m not working my 9-5, you’ll find me reading the latest gossip, chatting on the phone, watching a random YouTube vid, or snoozing. Sadly, I can go through an entire week without actually completing anything that I set out to do. I used to be a disciplinarian with a brilliant work ethic, though lately it’s becoming painfully obvious I need urgent intervention in this area.
I know what I need to do – the issue is doing it.
If you’re struggling to get things done, and feel as frustrated as I do, why don’t we accomplish our goals together! I’m so ready to make 2014 one to remember for all the right reasons. We still have 11 months – 335 days to be exact – to turn this into the most productive year yet.
Every month BLACKCITYGIRL will devise and release an action plan with 5 tasks to help keep you focused until the end of the year. *Warning this isn’t for slackers.
All you have to do is commit to winning! Are you in?
Practice and Prepare
1. Where do you want to be this time next year?
Imagine how proud you’ll feel at the beginning of 2015 having accomplished the goals on your list – even if it’s 50% of them. Without question your confidence will skyrocket in the knowledge that you are capable of achieving whatever you put your mind to. Ticking off each goal and conquering your fears will give you such a buzz, and make you feel unstoppable.
No path is straightforward; there will be setbacks, disappointments and failures, nonetheless you’ll be astounded at how determined you become by simply making the decision – once and for all – to walk in the right direction. Once you attain one goal, it won’t be such a challenge to achieve the next. Beware: success is addictive – you just wait and see.
2. Write down 5 major goals for the next 6 months
You are more likely to achieve your goals when they are set out into short time frames. Splitting your objectives into 6 month spells will make your progress far easier to track. Let’s face it, a lot can happen in one full year. For this reason, you will remain more motivated when your goal deadlines are within reach. 3. Find out what you need to know, learn or buy to reach your goals
Your destiny deserves preparation. The only way you can get ahead in this lifetime, is to make a decision to learn. In fact the secret of success is learning. From your fave YouTubers to performers – they all used the same formula – they climbed up the ranks by learning to master their craft until they became the best in the game. Think of learning as an investment. When we seek to achieve anything worth writing about, we must pay our dues in money, time, or mistakes.
Now is the time to research which courses and information you need, to get you the results you desire by the end of this year!
Begin your journey with what you have, for instance I started BCG with a dilapidated computer – I make no bones about it. That said, it’s never a bad thing to figure out the tools you will need to purchase in the future to help you cross the finishing line.
4. Spend a minimum of 1 hour a day dedicated to your goals
Success isn’t convenient, you have to make room for it! Whether that entails watching less TV, writing out a weekly timetable and giving up an hour of your social life each day, your goals aren’t going to be accomplished by themselves. It is the time you will sacrifice to work towards them, which will get you results quickly.
To give you an example, I work out 3 times a week – and I purposefully get up at 6am because my schedule won’t allow me to commit to exercising any other way. It wasn’t an easy decision, I’d rather lie in and get up at 8am in time for work, but if I want to be comfortable with my body image, I have to put in the necessary time to see results. That hour is the least I can do to prove I’m serious about getting what I want – same goes for you.
5. Be hands on and frugal from the beginning, it will save you time & money later
In the past, I would happily hire a professional because I just couldn’t be bothered to get my hands dirty. There is nothing more frustrating than the early stages of learning, all you can think of is, ‘forget this’ and that’s putting it mildly! I personally rant and rave when I can’t quite grasp a new way of operating.
Going through the motions is torture. However, learning things for yourself will save you a lot of time and money in the long run even if you do get a professional on board. When you know how to complete a task yourself, nobody can rip you off, you can always fix errors, and you will have total control of your destiny. Now that’s what you call smart!
